Thats one reason why starbound devs apparently used this to make their art. I personally feel both methods have advantages. Aseprite: Great professional editor with many time-saving features (paid) GraphicsGale: A classic, used in many games.

The biggest pro is that its license is straight forward so you wont be running into copyright and licensing problems (unlike alot of free alternatives, especially those that offer "subscriptions/upgrades" they can hide alot in those few words, whereas aseprite is just "meh u make it, its urs. Aseprite has a color replacement tool, but in contrast with Pyxel Edit’s color replace tool where you draw over the pixels you want to update, in Aseprite you just provide two colors and it will auto replace all pixels of the specified color at once. I am currently using it to make my 2d HUD and menu options etc for my 3d open world game, and also using it to make textures, and low-res background items when they are far away. I have not published my game, as i am wishing to make it 70% finished before publishing it,but aseprite is great for 2d game making, and it has many ways to export the file so that means it supports alot of engines.
